Outdoor Security Lighting Is Important
One of the absolute best deterrents to home invasion is outdoor security lighting. While outdoor lighting will not stop a crime, many studies have shown conclusively that criminals are far less likely to attempt to break into a well lit area at night. Whether it's something as simple as outdoor patio lighting or outdoor track lighting, connecting them with a motion detector or occupancy sensor will create effective security lighting. For most of your outdoor security lighting needs there is the choice between high intensity discharge flood lights or incandescent flood lights (halogen). Both types of lighting have their benefits and the final choice should be made based upon your needs. HID flood lights require a warm up period and are not designed for instantaneous lighting, but they are a much brighter, long lasting, and energy efficient source of light. Halogen lights used for outdoor security lighting are perfect for continuous or spontaneous lighting and work well with motion or occupancy sensors. Halogen lights can also be run off standard house current. They provide a white or yellow light, but are not preferable when concerned about aesthetic lighting. On opposite ends of the spectrum you can choose from discount outdoor lighting or outdoor solar lighting as a means to provide your outdoor security lighting. No matter what type of lights you choose, positioning of the lights is important. Because the lighting is for security, it should be placed outside of arms' reach so that it cannot be tampered with easily. The lighting should also illuminate the entry ways and the immediate surrounding area, which should be sufficient to discourage home invasion. When choosing your outdoor lighting you should keep your budget in mind first and then you want to think about ease of mounting in a secure position and you want to choose materials and lights that are durable as well as energy efficient. And lastly you should be concerned about light pollution. Many people fail to take their neighbors into consideration when angling their outdoor security lighting and inadvertently create light pollution. Proper angling and choosing lights that are designed to reduce glare can significantly reduce light pollution.
